Professor Nikki Cotterill
I qualified in 1999 and worked in medicine and surgery before pursuing my interests in research at the Bristol Urological Institute in 2003. I am now a Professor of Nursing in Continence Care at UWE and North Bristol NHS Trust having completed my PhD in 2009, developing a self-report symptom and quality of life questionnaire for individuals with anal incontinence – the ICIQ-B. I am also the Director of the Bladder and Bowel CONfidence Health Integration Team (@babconHIT) taking an Integrated Care Board, system-wide approach to improvements in continence care provision and the wider societal experience of living with bladder and bowel symptoms. I was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing in 2023 for my contribution to advancing the science and practice of nursing and the improvement of health and patient care through my focus on nurse-led research in continence.
Values and Work Approach
A driving ambition since my early PhD research has been to bridge the gap between people with bladder and bowel symptoms and the treatments that can help. I have spent 20 years focusing on developing research to improve outcomes for all with bladder and bowel symptoms and am passionate about improving the experience for individuals with a focus on self-help and service development.
Through the BABCON HIT we work collectively to raise the profile of bladder and bowel care through education, research and integrating care across systems, ensuring collaboration with patients and the public in all we do.

Dr Rebecca Coad
I have been working in an NHS R&D environment for 17 years, following an academic career in stem cell research.
Values and Work Approach
My move into the NHS R&D environment was driven by a desire to realise the impact of research on patients and NHS services. I am committed to inclusivity and accessibility, making research something that is available to all; whether professionally as a career option, as a public collaborator or as a participant. I am also driven by the need for promoting quality and integrity when engaging in research, to ensure that research is adding real value to the evidence base.
Professional Roles and Achievements
I have led the Research Development and Grants function at North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) since 2009. Over this time my fantastic team, and I, have supported the huge growth in the size and scope of the research portfolio led by NBT staff, to a point where NBT is currently in the top 3 of NHS Trusts in England for the size of our National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) grant portfolio.
Alongside this role I have previously worked as Director of Operations in the Bristol Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit at NBT, a uniquely NHS-based academic SLT unit, which has cemented itself with an international reputation in it’s field, since it was established over 30 years ago.
Prior to my move to NHS R&D, I had a career as a post-doctoral researcher, culminating in a position with Prof. Jonathan Slack, an outstanding leader in the field of developmental biology, at the University of Minnesota Stem Cell Institute.
Skills and Qualifications
I have over 20 years’ experience of applying for funding from national and international funding bodies, and managing complex research projects, both in academia and the NHS. In addition, I have extensive experience of NHS senior operational management; managing large budgets, risk management, intellectual property management, developing strategy, policies and practice. Importantly I have developed amazing relationships with both internal and external collaborators who are instrumental in developing high quality and impactful research to make real change in the NHS.
