WHO WE ARE
The Bristol Health Research Charity
The BHRC, originally known as the Southmead Hospital Research Foundation, was established in 1966 by a group of clinicians at Southmead Hospital. They had a mission for the charity, which is what it aspires towards to this day: “the promotion and development of clinical research at hospital clinics or other establishments under the control of North Bristol NHS Trust, and for the furtherance of postgraduate medical education.”
Through its funding, the charity supports both the research and the researcher, across a wealth of clinical and healthcare areas. It is keen to support a variety of staff, including: Doctors, Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs).
Research Fellowships
Enabled successful applicants to devote protected time to developing research applications to external funding bodies such as the Medical Research Council (MRC) or the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
Student Scholarships

They gave the student the opportunity to spend 4 – 6 weeks of the summer vacation, prior to their final school year, working under the supervision of a research active members of North Bristol NHS Trust. During the scholarship the students were given the opportunity to help with a research project. The aim of the scholarships is to not only encourage suitable young people go into the health service but also to give them an early introduction to research which the charity regards as the essential part of the workings of the NHS.
